Pros offer advice on handling the crowds

With more than 70,000 visitors expected to converge on Shanghai for the 2010 Expo, tourism, catering and environmental issues have taken the spotlight.

At a seminar - part of the ongoing China International Industry Fair - yesterday, authorities said they would issue 50 standards to focus on service fields.

Representatives from Kunming, Yunnan Province, and Aichi, Japan, which have both hosted expos, yesterday gave Shanghai some advice.

Masafumi Makimura, chief producer of the 2005 World Expo, related Japan's experience on food safety and other aspects.

Guo Fangming, director of Kunming Expo Bureau, focused how to design itineraries to meet different people's needs.

The Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision will look at environmental protection and energy-saving technology, including environmentally-friendly fuels for cars and buses.

Bureau executive director Weng Zuliang said public transport, public facilities and security issues would also be high on the agenda.

The Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission will issue the country's first standard regulating tourist agencies' operations next year.
