The Shanghai Expo has struck a batch of gold and silver medals featuring the mascot Haibao.

They will be in limited editions and the most expensive medal, one kilogram of 99.9 percent pure gold, will cost 318,000 yuan (US$44,228.09), of which only 300 will be available.

The most inexpensive will be a one-ounce silver medal retailing at 360 yuan. There will be 20,000 pieces of those offered for sale. Other weights of both medals will also be available.

The medals will be offered for sale throughout the country and about 30 percent of the medals will be available in Shanghai, Li Jing, assistant general manager of China Golddeal Investment Co Ltd, said.

The medals can be reserved at about 200 outlets in Lao Fengxiang jewelry store from today. Sales will begin on Saturday or Sunday.

Expo issued a set of stamps and a First Day Cover to mark the debut of Haibao on December 19.
