Outlook bleak for weekend
31/1/2008 10:20

Shanghai Daily news

Rain and snow are expected to fall across the whole weekend after an overcast day tomorrow.

The wet weather is expected to end on Monday, but forecasters say sunshine will still be in short supply next week.

Snow in Shanghai has been caused by a weather belt moving north from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Shanghai Meteorological Bureau forecasters said the intensity of snow and rain won't be as strong as last weekend, but temperatures will remain low.

Highs will range between two and three degrees Celsius, and lows between minus two and zero degrees.

Small snow falls hit some areas of the city again yesterday after a day's break, preventing the mercury from rising. Yesterday's high reached just 1.4 degrees in the downtown area, and the orange road-freeze alert remained current.

Forecasters said more snow will collect over the weekend, and people should be on the lookout for collapsing incidents. On Tuesday, a man was killed when a 400-square meter section of snow-laden roof collapsed at a market in Putuo District.

Shanghai Red Cross said yesterday that it had sent two million yuan (US$277,778) to the provinces of Guizhou, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi and Jiangxi to help local governments purchase food and clothes. Residents are being encouraged to donate money by calling the hotline, 6321 7380, by remitting to bank account number 3100 1574 0000 5000 4474, or by visiting the Red Cross office at 34 Yan'an Road E.
