Although the snow has stopped many migrant workers from going home, the
Shanghai Urban Construction and Communications Committee has pledged they will
have a happy lunar New Year.
According to the committee, nearly 360,000 of the city's 500,000 migrant
workers had gone home before the bad weather hit, but 50,000 might end up being
stranded.
"All stranded migrant workers will have places to go,'' said publicity
official Hua Qing.
Migrants waiting at transport stations have been advised to go back to the
living quarters provided by their employers. Those whose contracts have expired
will be resettled by the district-level construction management departments.
Migrant worker Xiao Yang returned to the Yueyang Square construction site of
the Longyuan Group after his train was canceled.
"It is better to go home,'' he said. "But if I fail, it doesn't matter. I
know the Group will treat us well.''
