Despite gravely overcrowded conditions at bus stops, rail stations and
airports, there have been remarkably few reports of disease outbreaks, officials
said yesterday.
There had been only minor instances of respiratory infections, food-related
illness, diarrhea and skin rash, Shanghai Health Bureau officials said.
Since January 25, more than 500 medical staff had been assigned to prevent
the outbreak of disease at the crowded venues.
District-based health bureaus set up temporary clinics for stranded
passengers, providing medical assistance. They also ensured there was proper air
ventilation and treated people with symptoms of vomiting, fever and diarrhea.
The Shanghai Center of Disease Control and Prevention set up three medical
teams to visit the stations and airports to instruct local doctors.
The No. 85 Hospital of PLA has also offered assistance by setting up a field
tent in the Shanghai Railway Station.
