Wu Xiaoying was crowned the
winner of the 2004 Shanghai Tourism Pageant on Saturday.
The 19-year-old
local winner works at China Eastern Airlines. She won the title after three
rounds of competition in the final, beating 11 other contestants.
"I'm
extremely excited. I think that confidence has been my best asset to keep me
smiling to the end," Wu told Shanghai Daily. "I've performed with a true heart,
which I believe also helps a lot."
Li Xin, a local college student, won
second prize.
The 22-year-old is the first male competitor to finish so high
in the contest's three-year history, said Zhang Mode, an official with the 2004
Shanghai Tourism Festival Organizing Committee.
He said compared to thae past
two years, this year's contest was more in touch with ordinary
citizens.
People of all ages and from all walks of life, were asked to raise
questions challenging the contestants. Family members and friends were invited
on stage to provide support.
In the next year, Wu will take an active role in
many social activities, help enhance the city's image as well as promote it as a
tourist destination, Zhang said.
