Luxury cruise ship Wanbang
Holiday has started sightseeing trips on the Huangpu River. It is the first time
a ship equipped with star-hotel facilities has sailed the route. Wanbang
departs every night from Monday to Thursday, heads slowly out to the East China
Sea, remains at sea overnight and returns to the city the following
morning. The price for a standard double room is 1,000 yuan (US$120). The
presidential suite is 6,900 yuan. Passengers choosing to stay in a room for
four, the cheapest onboard, pay 300 yuan each. "Our ship is more like a
moving hotel. It's different from regular cruise boats," said Wu Wen, vice
general manager of Shanghai Wanbang Cruises. "Passengers will be able to see the
scenery along the river, but also enjoy hotel-style service." The wanbang
Holiday, rebuilt from a foreign cargo ship, set out on its maiden voyage during
the National Day holiday in 2001. It also travels every Friday from Shanghai
to the Buddhist holy site of Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang Province. Onboard
facilities include a cinema, restaurants, massage center, pub, beauty salon,
supermarket, night club and swimming pool. Wu said businessmen are their
major customers as prices are quite high for individual tourists. An ordinary
sightseeing voyage on the Huangpu River costs about 50 yuan per hour.
