The 2004 Shanghai Tourism Festival concluded yesterday with fireworks
painting the sky over Century Park in Pudong. Tens of thousands ended the
holiday with a bang, viewing last night's fireworks show from England - the last
performance in the 5th International Music Fireworks Festival. "This year's
tourism festival was more international and closer to the public," said Yao
Mingbao, director of the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission. "All events
at the festival have shown that it's for ordinary people with the beauty of the
world and the happiness of life on display." During the 19-day festival there
were about 60 major events. According to the commission, more than 8.2 million
residents and tourists from both home and abroad attended the events. The number
of participants was 15.80 percent higher than last year. A record number of
overseas troupes and performers took part in the festival. Dozens of
performances from countries including the United States, Brazil, Italy, South
Africa, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand,
were introduced for the first time. The Jing'an International Rock Climbing
Competition, the first of its kind in the city, also welcomed 120 participants
from 30 countries and regions.
