Shanghai authorities say they have taken all necessary precautions to
guarantee security as the first-ever Formula One Chinese race preludes in
Shanghai with free practices on Friday. Police said a wide-ranging plan would
be fully implemented through practice sessions to the race day. Over two
thousand police officers will be on guard to insure security against low level
vandalism to international terrorism. The plan included quick reaction teams on
call around the clock. The police, of various classifications, are to be
disposed around the race venue Shanghai International Circuit, located in a
small town of Anting in Shanghai western suburb of Jiading. A temporary
police station has been set up at the circuit to handle emergencies. On the
track is another 2,000-strong security staff, consisting of employees of the
organizing committee and volunteers. About three hundred firemen, who have been
trained in strict Formula One procedure, will be on position to deal with car
crashes during the race. While a French security company, hired by Formula
One Management, will be responsible for team's security at paddocks and pits,
the main job of the Chinese police on track is to keep any person without
accreditation out.
