The Guitar Islancio trio, noted for its perfect blend of traditional
Icelandic folk songs and light jazz, will present one concert in Shanghai next
Tuesday.
The top musical group in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, in 2000
and 2001, Guitar Islancio consists of Bjorn Thoroddsen and Gunnar Thordarson on
guitar and Jon Rafnsson on double bass. The group was a success right from the
start -- their first album went ``gold'' in Iceland after achieving outstanding
sales. ``More than any other folk music, Icelandic songs communicate
seriousness, sublime atmosphere and hardship,'' says Iclandic composer Jon
Leifs. Apart from this rich musical resource, the trio also draws upon other
Nordic musical traditions. Their latest album ``Scandinavian Songs'' won wide
critical acclaim. The group has also collaborated with international musicians
such as French violinist Didier Lockwood, French guitarist Sylvain Luc and
Danish clarinetist Jorgen Svare. Thoroddsen, who graduated from the Guitar
Institute of Technology in Hollywood, California, is looking forward to the
trio's Shanghai performance and promises that the group will put on a ``good
show and good music -- swinging and happy music.''
