Picasso exhibition to open on Friday

The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall will host an exhibition of Pablo
Picasso's art works from this Friday until March 2. All the exhibits, which
will arrive in town tomorrow, come from the French-based Picasso
Foundation. As part of the Year of France in China, the exhibition will
present 265 plates, prints and watercolor paintings by the famous cubist
painter. Divided into eight series, the art works represent the Picasso's
different artistic periods from 1920 to 1968, featuring various subjects
including animals, portraits, poems and literary classics. Among them, "The
Three-cornered Hat" series of watercolor paintings is on display for the first
time since it was created about 84 years ago. According to the staff of the
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, this is the largest exhibition of
Picasso's works ever held in Asia. A talented and legendary artists, Picasso
(1881-1973) is generally regarded as the greatest artist of the last
century. He was unique as a pioneer of forms, an innovator of styles and
techniques, a master of modern art and one of the most prolific artists in
history, creating more than 60,000 works. Last year in New York, one of his
paintings, featuring a young boy holding a pipe, sold at an auction for
US$106.42 million.
