Every household in an
under-construction township in Nanhui District will have access to a super-fast
Internet hook up, which will be capable of transferring data 200 times faster
than current downtown connections. The city government will spend billions of
yuan to link the port township to the Internet by 2020, officials said, adding
that it is too early to put a specific figure on the cost of the plan. "We
expect to build a brand-new digital zone in Nanhui. If successful, it will be
used as a template for new townships around the country," Cai Hongming, head of
the planning sector of the Shanghai Port City Management Commission,
said. The township's fiber-optic link will be capable of transmitting 100
mega-bits of data a second, officials said. The township, covering 100 square
kilometers, is part of the city's giant Yangshan Deepwater Port project. By
2020, the town is expected to have a population of about 830,000 people, most of
whom will work for the port and nearby logistics companies. Cai said that the
high-speed Internet connection will make it easy for local residents to browse
the net, shop online or watch movie over the Web.
