A few months ago most rock enthuse asts in Shanghai would sigh mournfully when it came to discussing the city's short supply of live music venues. When Tang Hui Pub closed its doors in November last year, many started to wonder whether the slowly burgeoning phenomenon would die a slow death, or if other pubs and clubs could rise to the challenge and fill the void.

The Live Bar in Yangpu's university district was first to distinguish itself as a more than apt substitute, and Harley's Bar in Xujiahui area has long been an alternative for those in need of a more punk-oriented fix.

Now the Melting Pot has thrown its hat in the ring, hoping to get in amongst the mix.

With a relaxed "pub" atmosphere and unpretentious decor, the Melting Pot is the sort of bar you can imagine spending a lot of time hanging out with mates in.

Located on Taikang Road (near Ruijin Road S.), the Melting Pot has a twin bar of the same name across the river on Bibo Road in Pudong. Manager Guillaume Bardet, says the vibe and feel of these bars is all based around their live music performances.

There's a band playing every night except Sundays, and Mondays is an open jamming night where anyone can bring their instruments along and play with other interested musicians.

A Xinjiang band plays on Fridays, and the house band, who hail from Beijing, take the stage every other night except Sunday.

Playing all types of music from jazz and blues to rock "n" roll, the venue hopes to become a focal point for the growing contingent of Shanghai residents now seeking out "real" music.

Happy hour runs from 6pm until 9pm every day of the week, with pints of beer priced at 15 yuan (US$1.85) and other specials on soft drinks and coffee.

Also adding to the appeal is an open bar from 9pm until midnight on Tuesdays, when Bardet says patrons can drink as much as they like for 100 yuan and get a 20 percent discount on bottles.

Bardet says they're hoping to extend the food menu also, and with ample space and tables inside, this bar might be just the kind of melting pot you're looking for.
