Local residents will have a chance to vote on the best entertainment streets in town and help design tour routes for travelers arriving in the city as part of this year's Shanghai Tourism Festival.
The event will run from September 17 to October 6.
Residents will also have the chance to vote on the best float during a large parade and pick an "image ambassador" for the tourism pageant, said Dao Shuming, director of the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Commission.
"This year's festival will try to reach the door of each local family," he said.
Floats from more than 10 countries, including the United States, Egypt, Greece, Japan and South Korea, as well as from numerous Chinese provinces will parade along downtown Huaihai Road to mark the opening of the festival.
These floats will then parade into many residential areas in nine city districts and Chongming County throughout the 20-day event.
"Different from previous years, performers will sing, dance or perform plays on the floats," Dao said.
About 20 cruise ships decorated with colorful lights will parade down the Huangpu River on the night of September 24.
The shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival will once again be staged at Century Park. Fireworks designers from Finland and Greece will take part in the event.
"We hope that these diversified events can attract more visitors from home and abroad, and show them that Shanghai is a vibrant and modern city," Dao said.
Altogether 2.08 million people visited the city during the first six months of this year, an increase of 19.57 percent from the same period last year.
A south African travel exhibition will also be held at Shanghai Exhibition Center from September 22 to September 24.
The exhibition will give local travelers a chance to learn about the African nation.
