Wang Rongxin came to Moganshan Road near Suzhou Creek at
the end of 2003.
The former owner of an advertising company in a small
village in neighboring Jiangsu Province, Wang is well aware that Moganshan Road
has changed his life totally.
"I always wanted to fulfill my dream in art,"
the 37-year-old Wang says. "I abandoned everything I had in my hometown and came
here."
Unlike the big names on Moganshan Road, Wang isn't on the street's
priority list which means he isn't favored with a rental discount.
"This
space costs me nearly 15,000 yuan (US$1,852) per month," he says.
His studio
is on the first floor of a warehouse at No. 50 Moganshan Road with an area of
250 square meters and the space is clean and bright.
The space is divided
into two parts ¡ª studio and office.
A guzheng, an ancient Chinese stringed
musical instrument, stands inside the studio, as if echoing the Oriental spirit
that can be seen in one of Wang's canvases hanging on a wall.
"My paintings
sell well," he says. "So I don't have big burden on my shoulders to make ends
meet (despite the expensive rental)."
Although he now is one of the
"residents" of Mogan-shan Road, Wang says he has a limited circle of friends.
"Sometimes artists are not so easy to deal with, even though I am an artist
myself," he says. "Let me put this simply: No. 50 Moganshan Road is like a small
society where you can meet different people, some you like and some you
don't."
But the "small society" provides Wang with a plat-form on which he
can bring his art to more people ¡ª and enhance his reputation.
