To improve its landscaping, Shanghai plans to develop 20 square kilometers in
10 downtown areas into "model zones" this year, officials with Shanghai
Landscaping Administration Bureau said on January 11.
These zones will be
clean and well equipped, and will feature local cultural information in an
inviting setting.
It is planned that by 2010, the date of the World Expo, the
landscape authority will turn 20 percent (or 150 square kilometers) of the
entire 700-square-kilometer urban area into such model zones, and another 60
percent, or 400 square kilometers, into "standard zones".
The standard zones
will target areas currently with outdated and inferior facilities and
equipment.
