Shanghai will further ease local traffic to prevent long periods of traffic
congestion in many areas, according to a videophone conference on local traffic
yesterday morning.
The situation has improved since the city held a
mobilization conference to ease local traffic in November last year.
The Shanghai municipal government is working to ease local traffic
congestion, which affects the quality of residents' daily lives, Mayor Han Zheng
said. "We should not only be prepared for the long-term and the tough job of
easing local traffic, but be hopeful and confident as well," Han stressed.
In
the long term, establishing large capacity rail transport is an ultimate
solution for traffic jams, so Shanghai should gear up rail transport
construction to build a basic rail transport network by the year 2010, he
pointed out.
"Currently, we must relieve local traffic congestion by
building transportation facilities, and controlling and managing traffic flow,"
he said, adding that all the local districts, counties, units and citizens
should cooperate with each other to create a safe and orderly environment.
