The number of expatriates studying or working in Shanghai is increasing by
more than 10 percent every year, so that now there are more than 50,000 in the
city, nearly one-third of all the expats in China.
Shanghai has brought in
nearly 250,000 overseas experts for the ten local construction projects such as
the Meglev Train, the Shanghai International Automobile City, the Deep-water
Port and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
Among the overseas
Chinese students who plan to return to their homeland, 80 percent consider
Shanghai their top destination for work.
Since the city conducted a program
to return 10,000 overseas Chinese students more than one year ago, nearly 5,000
of these students have come to Shanghai. Moreover, only 12 percent were directly
introduced by the government, and most found jobs via the labor market.
After
completing a successful program to bring in 1,000 specialists from Hong Kong,
Shanghai has established a long-term mechanism for human resources exchanges
with this Special Administrative Region.
Moreover, in a bid to improve the
competitiveness of local talent in the global market, Shanghai has developed a
series of training programs together with overseas government departments,
universities, research institutes and multinationals.
More than 3,000 locals
were sent abroad for training last year.
