Traffic, city's hot topic

Gu Jia/Shanghai Daily news

Members of the CPPCC's Shanghai Committee proposed during a conference, which opened yesterday, that the countdown equipment for pedestrians next to the traffic light should be widely promoted within the city in order to restrict the behavior of both drivers and pedestrians when they cross roads.
The traffic administration departments have responded to this issue. Based on the existing countdown and the blind-friendly equipments on the 41 intersections, another 116 crossroads will also possess such equipment by end of this year.  However, the traffic lights won't be replaced by these equipments.
Traffic has been an important issue during the annual plenary meeting of the Shanghai Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.  Almost 40 out of the 490 proposals presented during the section on January 17 deal with the traffic congestion and the disorder on city streets.
