'Healthy city' campaign starts

Shanghai Daily news

The municipal government launched a weeklong campaign to promote the concept of a "healthy city" yesterday, just as a separate crusade against flies and mosquitoes started.
Experts predicted a warm enough winter for vermin to survive. That could lead to quick breeding in the spring.
It is the fourth straight year the city has conducted moves to control the population of mosquitoes and other insects.
Experts said garbage transfer points, greenland areas, stagnant water and indoor areas, such as behind sofas, are ideal places for mosquitoes to breed.
"It is important for property management companies to renovate water scenery and garbage regularly," said Dr Zhu Renyi from the vector control department of Shanghai Disease Prevention and Control Center. "For local residents, it is useful to put a small amount of salt or fish in the water of bonsai plants."
"The city focuses on creating a healthy environment, ensuring a healthy food supply, encouraging healthy lifestyles, as well as promoting healthy schools and neighborhoods," said Li Zhongyang, vice director of the Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Commission.
"For instance, we examined 82 percent of vegetables, 60 percent of meats and 82 percent of bean products and other edible agricultural products last year," she added.
Li said the biggest concern of individuals is food safety.
