Paddlers jostle for precious berths

Shanghai Daily news

Chinese paddlers are bracing for another round of super contest with the World Table Tennis Championship in Shanghai just a little over a month away.
With the Chinese Table Tennis Association cabinet packed with over 90 trophies from major tournaments, it is not surprising that the fans - and the association - are expecting another grand sweep at the event at home.
The national side has never been left wanting for talents. The headache is for the coaches, however, as it battles a thin line in selecting their squads.
The selection process that invariably leaves behind a few heartaches will this time be decided after a series of inner-team competitions.
In the men's category, Shanghai-native Wang Liqing, currently sitting atop the world rankings, has already secured a place - if he remains free of injuries - in the seven-player lineup for the men's singles competition after winning the premium Qatar Open last month.
Ma Lin, a key member in China's success at the world team championship last year, boosted his own chances with two straight victories in the opening rounds of the inner-team series over the past fortnight. Future hopefuls Liu Guozheng and Wang Hao are the other two names likely to make it in the final roster.
Veteran Kong Linghui, the singles' gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, may also be making a return after being dropped for the Athens Games last year.
The remaining berths will be contested furiously by the likes of Ma Long, Qiu Yike, Chen Qi and some up-and-coming youngsters.
The Chinese have traditionally been dominant in the sport but lost two major men's titles in the last couple of years, denting some bit of their confidence.
The backbone of the women's contingent is Athens Olympic winner Zhang Yining and defending champion Wang Nan. The other two world top-five players Niu Jianfeng and Guo Yue are also expected to make it virtually unchallenged.
But at least five other players will have to go all the way to impress their coaches in the domestic series to land the remaining three berths.
The final teams will not be announced until late April.
Altogether five trophies will be on offer at the championship, which is scheduled from April 30 to May 6 at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
