Table tennis souvenirs like cork-based balls from the 1890s and Mickey
Mouse-patterned rackets of the 1930s or even a hand-crocheted net embroidered
with butterflies will be up for display at an exhibition in Shanghai in
April. The ping pong mementos featuring the odds and heritage of the
century-old sport are headed for the city and will be exhibited during the World
Table Tennis Championship. About 1,000 antique pieces will go on display at
the tournament venue Shanghai Grand Stage in April-May, a team of visiting
International Table Tennis Federation officials revealed
yesterday. "Spectators will not have to pay extra money for the exhibition
but they will surely have extra fun," said Michel Etter. A majority of the
exhibits will be shipped to Shanghai from ITTF headquarter in Lausanne,
Switzerland. The Chinese Table Tennis Association will also chip in with
domestic exhibits. The ITTF boasts of a huge collection - close to 3,000
memorabilia - at its official museum in Lausanne. An ITTF inspection team
arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday to watch the preparations of the World Table
Tennis Championship. The group also visited the venue yesterday. Shanghai
Grand Stage is in the final phase of its renovation and local officials briefed
the visitors on the progress. "This looks set to be a fantastic tournament
given the quality facilities on hand and the popularity of the sport in the
country," said Jordi Serra, the executive director of ITTF who also heads the
team. The officials will wrap up their inspection tonight. Table tennis
players from no less than 200 countries will duel from April 30 and May 6 with
the cream among them clashing for titles in five categories, namely men's and
women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
