A group of Shanghai movie theaters are marketing a special card that provides
discounts during off-peak hours in the morning and early afternoon. The
Sunshine Film Preferential Card gives theatergoers a 30-movie package for 150
yuan (US$18). The card can be used every day between 8am and 1pm and will be
valid for one year. Some 60 to 70 percent of the films will be domestic
offerings, and the rest will be Hollywood productions. The card has been
test-marketed at the Shanghai Film Art Center, the Nextage Film Art Center and
the West-South Film Art Center and is being promoted in conjunction with the
Eighth Shanghai International Film Festival, which opens tonight. Organizers
said the discount card will soon go on sale at 20 city cinemas. Recently
shown films in the program included "Peacock," the winner of the Berlin Film
Festival's Silver Bear Award; "Divergence" from Hong Kong, and "The Interpreter"
starring Nicole Kidman. The promotion is pleasing both those involved in the
movie industry and those who fill the theater seats. "I think the practice
will enhance the competitiveness of domestic films against foreign ones," said
Fu Huayang, director of the critically acclaimed "Peach Blossom." Xu Bingnan,
a worker, has seen five films using his promotional card. He's generally pleased
but has one piece of advice: "I hope we can be offered a wider variety of
alternatives such as the movie 'Shanghai Dreams."'
