Tickets went on sale this weekend
for the Eighth Shanghai International Film Festival, and film buffs were quick
to book seats. "So far, we have sold more than one-quarter of our total
ticket allotment," said Zhang Zhidan, a manager at the Shanghai Film Art Center
- the film festival's main site. Zhang said the cinema has sold about
500,000 yuan (US$61,000) worth of tickets for the festival since they went on
sale on Saturday. The festival will run from June 11-19 at 17 local cinemas, and
includes 200 movies. Zhang said big-name Hollywood pictures, such as
"Sideways" and "Samara," are among the most-popular flicks, along with several
European movies such as "Hotel Rwanda" and the French comedy "Just
Friends." Peng lun, a local movie fan, says he always attends the festival.
This year he booked tickets for "Hotel Rwanda" and the German film "Downfall."
"Hollywood blockbusters are not hard to find," he said. "But the festival
presents the rare opportunity to see some excellent European films, which are
seldom shown in local cinemas." While all of the films will be screened with
English subtitles, English descriptions for each film are not available at
present, a big inconvenience for foreign movie buffs. Nicole steinbeck, a
tourist from France, complained that except for the English title and
nationality, she knows nothing about many of the movies. "It is a headache
for me to choose from so many films," she said. "I have to copy the titles of
each film and consult my friends later."
