A letter inviting Dr Sun Yat-sen to become the chairman of Fudan University
will go on display at the school's centenary history museum, which is scheduled
to open on Saturday, Fudan officials announced yesterday.
The letter was
written by Fudan's first president, Ma Xiangbo, and sent to Sun (1866-1925) in
1912, when Sun was the country's provisional president.
Sun accepted the
position and held it until he died. It was the only time he accepted a post on a
university board of directors, according to Fudan officials.
"The letter is a
priceless piece for Fudan, and it also indicates the century-old university's
long revolutionary history," said Zhou Guifa, a researcher at Fudan.
He said
the new museum will also exhibit a paper motto Sun wrote in 1919 to encourage
Fudan students to join the country's democratic revolution.
Covering more
than 700 square meters, the museum is housed in one of the century-old buildings
on the university's Handan Road campus.
More than 1,000 pictures and nearly
200 articles related to Fudan's development over the past century will be
exhibited.
Most of the exhibits were donated by Fudan alumni or collected
from the community over the past two decades as many precious documents that
were kept on campus were ruined during the country's Culture Revolution
(1966-1976).
Once it is completed, the history museum will be opened to
students free of charge. Students will also be allowed to visit by appointment
during winter and summer vacations.
