Zeng Chao, a third-year
student at Fudan University, is the second student in the school's history to
land an internship at a top accounting firm in New York. The 21-year-old beat
out 36 students from eight universities in the city to win the 2005 Sanford Yung
Scholars Program for Excellence in Accounting Studies, an award established by
and named after a Hong Kong accountant. The chairman of Fudan's accounting
academy, a student group, will be offered a 20,000-yuan (US$2,469) scholarship,
and the opportunity to take an internship at the PricewaterhouseCoopers New York
office for six to eight weeks next summer. "I didn't expect to be the final
winner of such an honorable opportunity, but my success is no coincidence," said
Zeng, who was born and raised in Shanghai. Since entering Fudan's accounting
department in 2003, Zeng has kept busy organizing and attending all kinds of
student activities related to finance and management. As head of Fudan's
student accounting community, Zeng organized tours of the local offices of the
big-four accounting firms for more than 100 accounting academy members. He
also helped to organize the Shanghai Financial Statement Contest for University
Students - a task that included candidate selection, training and inviting
experts to help with the exam. Hong Jianqiao, vice dean at Fudan's accounting
department, said that Zeng's balance between work and study was critical to
landing the internship, as the scholarship competition looked at more than just
grades. Currently, the third-year student is preparing for the Association of
Certified Charter Accountants exam, which is one of the toughest but most
valuable professional accounting qualifications in the world. Zeng said that
he expects to follow in the foot steps of his grandfather and cousin, who are
both professional accountants, and hopes to become a senior accountant with an
investment bank or consulting firm. "I hope the upcoming internship in the
United States will open my eyes and benefit my future career development," Zeng
said.
