Fudan University
launched its Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts yesterday. Sponsored by Fudan
and several local media and business groups, SIVA is the second independent
college associated with the century-old fame of Fudan University, following the
establishment of the Fudan-Pacific Institute of Finance last year. With an
investment of 420 million yuan (US$50.6 million), the school located in
Songjiang University Town hosts five subordinate departments, including visual
communication design, media and television, industrial design, fashion design
and painting. More than 100 experienced professors and young artists from
both home and abroad have been employed as permanent lecturers. The school will
also invite principals of eight US, British, French and German art institutes to
compose a board of international professional consultants. "The school will
gear up to build itself into a world-class visual art institute," said Wu
Chunji, a SIVA official. Undergraduate students at SIVA will study art basics
for one year before choosing from the five majors in their second academic year.
The institute expects to enroll 300 students this year, with its total capacity
expected to reach 3,000 in the future.
