Fudan University will
offer the first master's program taught in English in the city starting this
fall, in order to attract more foreign students, school officials announced
yesterday. Fudan hopes to enroll 20 foreign students in the Chinese Politics
and Diplomacy Program this September. Students will be required to complete
31 academic credits within two years, and must write and defend a thesis in
English before they are granted a master's degree. Classes will be held during
the day from Monday to Friday, not on weekends or at night. The school will
also offer a six-month or one-year certificate program for visiting scholars,
Fudan officials said. Beijing University is the only other school in the
country to offer such a program. "Opening an English-language program is one
of the most important steps for the university to attract more foreign
students," said Yang Zengguo, vice director of Fudan's foreign student
office. Fudan hopes to expand the number of foreign students on campus from
the current 2,300 to 4,500 by 2010. At that time, foreign students are expected
to account for 10 to 15 percent of the university's total student body. Yang
said that more than 30 foreigners had applied for the program so far, mostly
government-funded diplomats. Fudan will evaluate applicants' admission
qualifications at the end of this month.
