Carriers get ready for flights to Taiwan

China Eastern Airlines said yesterday it will operate 20 flights across the Taiwan Strait over the coming lunar New Year, the most of any Chinese carrier.
Air service between Shanghai and Taipei will run from January 20 to February 5.
The first flight will take off at 9:30am at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and arrive in Taipei at 12:30pm, the Shanghai-based carrier said.
The same plane will leave Taipei at 1:30pm and return to Shanghai three hours later.
As they did last year, the non-stop flights will overfly Hong Kong to address political considerations.
But there's one big difference this year. The latest agreement on cross-strait charter flights expands the scope of passengers allowed - and boosts the possibility for the airlines to make a profit.
Along with Taiwan business people and their families, this year Taiwan residents holding certificates for travel between the island and the mainland will also be allowed to take the flights.
"We expect better yields this time as we'll be able to take Taiwan tourists to the mainland on our return flights," said Zhang Ming, a China Eastern official. "During last year's charter flights almost all the planes were empty when they headed back, and we experienced a loss."
Six airlines from the mainland and six from Taiwan will provide 72 round-trips during the lunar New Year, which dawns on January 29.
New year flights will also operate from Beijing, Guangzhou and Xiamen on the mainland to Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
