The city government held a safety production conference yesterday to urge
departments at all levels to take precautions against any potential accident
that may cause major casualties or bad social effects during the coming Spring
Festival. "The Spring Festival holiday is a peak period for accidents, so the
city will strengthen its supervision of security issues during the runup to the
Chinese Lunar New Year," Mayor Han Zheng told the meeting. Yesterday's
meeting took place following a national television conference on safety
production broadcast from Beijing. Han said the government's efforts would
focus on three aspects during the following several days. First, inspections
will be enhanced mainly on dangerous chemical companies, pyrotechnics and public
entertainment venues. Secondly, road traffic and railway departments will
work hard to ensure a safe and smooth transport environment. "The number of
drunk drivers is usually on the rise during the holiday time," said Han, adding
local railway authorities should also ensure migrants can return to their
hometown for the Spring Festival. Finally, Han appealed to local
manufacturers to make good use of the week-long vacation to thoroughly examine
equipment. "It is an ideal time to upgrade the facilities and discover hidden
perils," he said, stressing that there must be staff on duty during the
holidays.
