China's top advisory body concluded its annual session in
Beijing this morning after adopting a political resolution which calls on
the nation to firmly oppose and check "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces
and activities.
The Fourth Session of the Tenth National Committee of the Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended by more than 2,000 advisors
from across the country, opened on March 3.
"We shall unite all the descendants of the Chinese nation who love the
motherland to resolutely oppose and check 'Taiwan independence' secessionist
forces and activities, and contribute to the development of cross-Straits
relations and the reunification of our motherland," the resolution said.
Taiwan authorities have accelerated the steps of "Taiwan independence" this
year, in overt defiance to the strong opposition of compatriots on both sides of
the Taiwan Straits, the resolution said.
It is a dangerous step that undermines the cross-Straits relations for Taiwan
leader to cease the function of the "National Unification Council" and cease the
application of the council's guidelines on unifying with the mainland, said the
resolution.
"Our determination to safeguard our country's sovereignty and territorial
integrity is unshakable," the resolution said.
President Hu Jintao and other Chinese leaders were present at the closing
meeting presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.
The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people,
serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political
consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and a
major manifestation of socialist democracy.
