The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expect open and fair report for
the Beijing Olympic Games, said IOC member Kevan Gosper yesterday.
Gosper, also chairman of the IOC Press Commission, said he was impressed by
China's openness and transparency in covering the recent earthquake in Sichuan
province and he expected the same reporting style for the up-coming Games.
"National journalists as well as international journalists were free to go
there to interview and take shots and for this to go out in the world was very
important," said Gosper.
"For such tragedy, there are always reservations in many countries when they
have disasters. They are concerned about pictures going out or interviews going
out. But the point is you got the best results because people of the world
understand," he said.
Gosper said in the past 10 days he was in the United States and Australia,
both places he experienced understanding for China.
"And the mood in international commentary was very positive," he added.
Gosper said he expected the same open and fair report for the Games.
"It will be the sort of reporting we hope for the Games. I expect the
reporting for the Games to be very open and very fair," he said.
"It could be a very good legacy for the country to experience the benefits of
continued opening up and communications," he said.
Gosper is in Beijing for the 71st International Sports Press Association
Congress.
The Beijing Olympic Games is slated for August 8 to 24 in the Chinese
capital.
