IOC warns to impose Olympic ban for doping offenders
24/8/2007 16:40

Serious doping offenders could be banned from the next Olympics even if their regular suspension had ended, IOC President Jacques Rogge warned today.

Rogge made these remarks at a news conference after a meeting with IAAF chief Lamine Diack. That means that the IOC supports the athletics governing body's decision on Thursday that even first-time doping offenders could face four-year ban from competitions.

"Every athlete who is penalized for more than six months which would automatically be the case for anabolic steroids, blood transfusions and EPO could not participate in the next Games," Rogge said.

IAAF has pushed to increase the benchmark for serious first-time doping offenses in all sports from two to four years.

The IOC is aiming to toughen doping laws and Rogge said he supported the IAAF, which wants the ban for serious first-time offenders doubled from two to four years.

The World Anti-Doping Agency will make a review of its code at a November conference in Madrid.
