Australian opposition leader supports PM in attending Beijing Olympics

Australian opposition leader Brendan Nelson said today that he will
support Prime Minister Kevin Rudd if Rudd decides to attend the Beijing Olympic
Games. "I think he should attend, if his diary permits, of course," Nelson
told Fairfax Radio Network. Rudd has not yet confirmed if he will attend the
Beijing Olympics, but has ruled out a boycott of the event. "I think that we
shouldn't boycott the Games, and we shouldn't boycott the opening ceremony,"
Nelson said. He added that Australian athletes would suffer a great deal if
Australia boycotts the Beijing Olympic Games. "Why should people who spend
their whole lifetime training to represent this country be sabotaged by a
boycott?" Nelson said.
