Kenyan VP calls for diversity at Olympics

Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said there is need to diversify
at the Olympic Games if the country is to win more medals in future
assignments. Musyoka who led a team of government officials in receiving the
triumphant team from Beijing on Wednesday night said the team would have won
even more medals. "The team in Beijing did a marvellous job but it is also
time we invested in other sports disciplines like table tennis, gymnastics and
also boxing so as to win more medals at the Olympics," he said according to a
press release from his office. "Had we won a few other medals from other
disciplines and not athletics alone then we would have emerged as a world
power," Musyoka said. The VP, however, acknowledged the effort put in by the
Kenyan team that finished in 15th position at the Games with five gold, five
silver and four bronze medals. He said it was no mean achievement for the
team to finish top in Africa and fourth in the world in the athletics
table. Sports minister Hellen Sambili who was also on hand to receive the
team said preparations for the next Olympic Games in London should start
immediately. "The 2012 is not far and we should start preparing now so as to
even register better results than we got in Beijing," Sambili said. Shealso
praised the athletes for putting up a good show.
