While the north is starting to feel the extreme summer heat, the south is
battling rainstorms with Fujian Province authorities confirming at least 10
people died in floods.
The China Meteorological Administration yesterday
issued two weather alerts - severe rainstorms in the south and temperatures up
to 42 degrees Celsius in the north were forecast today.
Temperatures ranging
from 40 to 42 degrees Celsius will hit central Shaanxi Province, the southwest
of Shanxi Province, northwestern Henan Province, western Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to the
forecast.
Other regions in the north will experience highs from 35 to 39
degrees Celsius, including Gansu Province, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,
Beijing, Tianjin, Anhui Province, Henan Province, Hubei Province, Jiangsu
Province and central western Shandong Province.
People in the north should
avoid outdoor physical activities to avoid heat stroke and take care of seniors,
young children and those who are ill, said Qiao Lin, a senior engineer with the
China Meteorological Administration.
Meanwhile, torrential rain over the past
several days killed at least 10 people in northern and western parts of Fujian
Province.
In Nanping City, the disaster affected 573,000 residents. By
yesterday, two people were confirmed killed in floods while landslides left five
others dead in the rainstorm-stricken area.
Rainstorms also toppled 1,760
houses and damaged another 3,994. Direct economic losses were estimated at 439.2
million yuan (US$52.8 million) in the province.
In Dongfeng Town of Jian'ou
City, local government sources confirmed yesterday that three people were killed
in flooding along all the local rivers.
Fujian Provincial Headquarters for
Flood Control said torrential rain hit Nanping City and several other cities and
counties starting on Friday. Eleven counties and cities reported rainfall of
more than 100 millimeters while 19 cities and counties reported rainfall of 50
to 90 millimeters.
The storms caused serious flooding of waterways including
the Minjiang River, the largest river in Fujian, and some of its tributaries
like the Jianxi and Fuchun rivers.
Elsewhere, water levels in two rivers
running through Wuzhou and Guigang - major cities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region - continued to rise yesterday.
