Rainstorms continued to lash Hong Kong yesterday, causing flooding and
traffic congestion while delaying 89 flights. According to sources from the
Airport Authority, 62 flights departing Hong Kong and 27 arriving were delayed
by at least 15 minutes at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday. Around
10am, the Hong Kong Observatory issued this year's first red rainstorm warning
signal which was canceled in the afternoon. The Transport Department said
traffic had been affected by flooding at various places. Under the red
rainstorm warning, the Airport Tunnel and many roads were under knee-deep water,
resulting in closure of some lanes. Traffic congestion was observed in Kowloon
East. Maintenance departments have been trying to drain off excessive water to
bring back normalcy. The transport department activated the Emergency
Transport Co-ordination Center yesterday morning after the rainstorm warning by
the Hong Kong Observatory, to closely monitor the traffic situation and maintain
close communication with transport operators.
