Rain blamed for 3 deaths

Heavy rainfall in Shaanxi Province over the weekend was blamed for three deaths.
Another 22,000 people were affected and about 3,870 hectares of crops were destroyed, the provincial flood control and prevention headquarters said yesterday.
According to the source, 94 counties of the province were affected, with rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters in some areas.
Rain in Huayin City led to several mountain torrents which flooded 968 rural households in five villages.
The direct economic loss was estimated at more than 45 million yuan (US$5.42 million).
Meanwhile, eight people were missing after heavy rainstorms caused mountain torrents and mudslides in Sichuan Province over the weekend, according to the provincial disaster-relief office.
Rainstorms hit 33 counties in 7 cities including the capital Chengdu, Meishan, Deyang and Ya'an. Rainfall ranged from 100 millimeters to 238 millimeters, the office said.
Eight people were washed away from either floods, mountain torrents or mudslides on Saturday.
Rescuers were still searching for the missing.
Torrential rain was also blamed for one person's death in Gansu Province. Floods toppled several hundred houses, destroyed cropland and washed out roads in some counties, said a report released by the provincial flood control headquarters on Saturday.
The meteorological station predicted more rain in the next few days.
The outlying Kangle county, one of the worst affected, received 137 millimeters of rain in 24 hours starting on Wednesday night, the report said.
At 3:36am on Thursday, the peak water flow measured 1,280 cubic meters per second - the biggest flood in 50 years -at Guocheng hydrological station on Zuli River, a tributary of the Yellow River.
Flood control departments across the province were told to keep close watch on all reservoirs and riverbanks.
