Heavy rainfall in Shaanxi Province over the weekend was blamed for three
deaths. Another 22,000 people were affected and about 3,870 hectares of crops
were destroyed, the provincial flood control and prevention headquarters said
yesterday. According to the source, 94 counties of the province were
affected, with rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters in some areas. Rain in
Huayin City led to several mountain torrents which flooded 968 rural households
in five villages. The direct economic loss was estimated at more than 45
million yuan (US$5.42 million). Meanwhile, eight people were missing after
heavy rainstorms caused mountain torrents and mudslides in Sichuan Province over
the weekend, according to the provincial disaster-relief office. Rainstorms
hit 33 counties in 7 cities including the capital Chengdu, Meishan, Deyang and
Ya'an. Rainfall ranged from 100 millimeters to 238 millimeters, the office
said. Eight people were washed away from either floods, mountain torrents or
mudslides on Saturday. Rescuers were still searching for the
missing. Torrential rain was also blamed for one person's death in Gansu
Province. Floods toppled several hundred houses, destroyed cropland and washed
out roads in some counties, said a report released by the provincial flood
control headquarters on Saturday. The meteorological station predicted more
rain in the next few days. The outlying Kangle county, one of the worst
affected, received 137 millimeters of rain in 24 hours starting on Wednesday
night, the report said. At 3:36am on Thursday, the peak water flow measured
1,280 cubic meters per second - the biggest flood in 50 years -at Guocheng
