President Hu Jintao told the United Nations that China is implementing new
measures to help other developing countries, including billions of US dollars in
additional financial aid. Hu's remarks were delivered in New York on
Wednesday during a summit associated with the UN's 60th anniversary. Among
its assistance measures, China will remove trade tariffs on many products coming
from the 39 least developed countries that have diplomatic relations with China,
Hu said. The move covers must China-bound exports from those nations. China
will further expand its aid programs to heavily indebted countries by writing
off some of their loan debts. Hu said China will provide US$10 billion in
loans and preferential export buyer's credits to developing countries in the
next three years to improve their infrastructure and promote cooperation between
enterprises on both sides. Also in the next three yeas, China will increase
its assistance to developing countries - African nations in particular - by
providing them with anti-malaria drugs and other medicines, helping them set up
and improve medical facilities and training medical staff. Hu said China will
help train 30,000 professionals in a wide range of fields to assist developing
countries. He said China's growth is closely bound to the development of the
entire world, and China is ready to work with all countries to make the 21st
century truly "the century of development for all." The Chinese president put
forward several other proposals to help implement the UN's Millennium
Development Goals, step up international cooperation on development and achieve
common prosperity: *Further deepen reforms to make the global economic system
more equitable. *Respect diversity in national modes of development and
promote the sharing of development experiences. *Build a fair, rational and
effective Millennium Development Goals evaluation framework to conduct timely
reviews of the progress made by countries, and monitor and promote the delivery
of promised international cooperation and development assistance. *Strengthen
the role of the United Nations in promoting international cooperation on
development. *In a news conference in Beijing yesterday, Chinese Foreign
Ministry spokesman Qin Gang underlined Hu's remarks. *"We hope to enhance
cooperation among countries and bridge the gap between the South and the North
to ensure the realization of the Millennium Development Goals," the spokesman
said. (Xinhua)
