Love from outer space: Taikonauts greet compatriots
17/10/2005 8:27

Taikonauts Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng on the Shenzhou VI spacecraft greeted all Chinese compatriots, including those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, expressing gratitude for the people's love.
The astronauts - "taikonauts" in Chinese - are to return today after a five-day mission that began last Wednesday morning. It is China's second manned space flight.
Through satellite communications, an official at the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center told Fei and Nie that many Chinese at home and abroad have wished them a safe and successful return.
"We're grateful for the deep love and concern by all Chinese people, the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan compatriots," said Nie in a hookup.
"We will do our utmost to fulfill the mission," Fei pledged.
Fei said they were "feeling good," having a "happy" life in space, and said their work was proceeding smoothly.
The long-distance space call took place as the spacecraft was completing its 71st circuit.
The two crew members have spoken briefly with family members and Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Hu praised their performance and wished them a triumphant return.
Speaking in the Beijing Aerospace Command and Control Center, Hu congratulated the taikonauts and inquired about their health and work.
"The spacecraft is working well and we are feeling good. All space scientific experiments are carried out smoothly as planned," Nie said.
"You can rest assured, and all the people of the motherland can rest assured," he told the president.
"The successful launch of Shenzhou VI represents another major step forward in China's manned spaceflight program," said Hu.
"The motherland and people are proud of you. I hope you will successfully complete your task by carrying out the mission calmly and carefully and have a triumphant return," he said.
Fei thanked the president for his concern and for the support of the people and said, "we will definitely fulfill the mission completely."
The five-minute conversation was broadcast live on national television.
