Olympic medallist Liu Xia to catch eyes at National Games
12/10/2005 15:10

With the only big name on the mat of judo tournament at the 10th National Games, Liu Xia from Shandong province will take the spotlight in the competitions.
Liu Xia, silver medalist of the women's 78kg category at the Athens Olympic Games, has been widely regarded as the title favorite of the category on Wednesday.
Liu, who had a bodyweight of about 100kg, made efforts to lose her bodyweight and competed in the 78kg category and took the silver medal as a dark horse in Athens.
However, Liu has to keep an eye on the host judoka Li Suxia. The 22-year-old girl is also a member of the national team and is eager to make a hit in front of the local crowd on Wednesday.
And at the same time, Judokas from Jiangsu could be big winners in the two men's events on Tuesday, as they have three national team members in the men's middle weight and half heavy weight categories.
In the men's 100kg event, Song Qitao and Ma Jiaqing will square off against heavy judokas from other teams. 31-year-old Ma was the silver medallist at the last National Games and 27-year-old Song expects to bid farewell to his judo career with Wednesday's gold.
Nevertheless, Aotegenbater and Haosibayaer from Inner Mongolia would possibly make strong challenges to the Jiangsu judokas in the category. Aotegenbater was the winner at last two edition of the National Games and Haosibayaer grabbed a bronze medal four years ago.
As for men's 90kg event, 25-year-old Xu Zhiming is going to defend his title.
Besides, the crown of women's 70kg would find its new owner as Guangdong's Wang Haixia didn't come to defend her title. It seems that Qin Dongya is the biggest name in the women's middle weight category, as the 27-year-old Liaoning native took home the bronze at the Athens Olympics last year.
Certainly, national team members Zhang Zhanjie and Yan Jingyi from Guangdong would endeavor to hold back Qin on the mat.

Veterans set to shine as swimming kicks off at National Games

Veterans are most likely to show dominance as the swimming competition kicks off on Thursday at the 10th Chinese National Games.
Four gold medals will be decided during the first day's races in the women's 400m individual medley, men's 400m freestyle and both women's and men's 4x100m freestyle relays.
Twenty-year-old Qi Hui from Chinese Army, 200m breaststroke winner in the 2002 short course world championships, is the hot candidate for the 400m individual medley.
Qi, who won the silver medal in the last National Games four years ago, is better known for her gift in breaststroke, breaking women's 200m breaststroke world records twice in 2001 and 2002.
She has clinched 14 titles in World Cup short course series from 1999 on and has maintained a good form leading to the National Games.
Men's 400m freestyle welcomed back reigning champion Yu Cheng from Zhejiang. The 22-year-old said he is still a formidable gold contender in the event. Beijing's Zhang Lin, 18, is expected to produce some surprise.
In the 4x100m freestyle relays, Shanghai and Guangdong, defending champions in the men's and women's races respectively, are likely to retain their honor while Zhejiang is the team capable of deliver some threats.
