High tech highlights China's National Games
12/10/2005 17:29

What if a shuttle bus carrying an army of reporters breaks down on the way to the soccer final of the Chinese National Games?

What if thousands of people call at the same time after the opening ceremony and clog the inter-communication of the organizing committee?

What if a spectator is on the way to the tennis final but the match has kicked off?

All these concerns will be unnecessary as advanced technology in communication has been applied to the Games, which is to officially open Wednesday evening.

Xu Hongwei, an engineer with the Shangrila Software, said that all 2,000-plus coaches designated to the Games could be positioned and deployed immediately under a LBS system so that the coach nearest to the disabled shuttle bus could arrive as soon as possible.

"A small device with similar size and shape of a mobile phone has been installed in every coach designated to the Games, so that they could be live monitored at any point of the Nanjing city, andcould receive the orders from the vehicles control and command center immediately," said Xu.

"The organizers would have trouble in effectively deploying such a large number of vehicles without the positioning system," he added.

The event organization would not be affected either in case that the inter-communication between organizing staff might be clogged due to the flood of calls after the opening ceremony,

"The organizing staff's numbers have been put ahead in the queue so that their calls will be given priorities," said Xu.

"Besides, if a department director of the organizing committee needs to have an emergency meeting with his staff, he doesn't needto overcome the traffic jam to gather, as he could use his mobile phone to call a maximum of 60 staff at one time and has a trans-space meeting with their own mobile phones.

"It is called mobile phone meeting, as we have inserted all thestaff's numbers in a communication network in advance," Xu added.

As for spectators who are late for a match, they would not needto worry as they could watch the competition live on their mobile phones.

Alcatel Shanghai Bell is charged of providing live and recordedvideo footage of the competition on the mini-screen of handsets.

"The 10th National Games will be broadcast by local television stations, and all their broadcasting can be shown on the mobile phones," said Shi Zheming, a senior staff in technical sales of Alcatel Shanghai Bell.

Both Shangrila Software and Alcatel Shanghai Bell are the technical partners of China Mobile, one of the major sponsors to both the National Games and the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

"The communication technology applied to the National Games is not the most advanced we have, as we also attach importance to their reliability. We must use reliable technology in the Games," said Duanmu Wenlin, who works in Jiangsu Mobile, the local branch of China Mobile.

"The communication technology is developing very fast. When Beijing stages the Olympics in about three years, the technology is sure to be more advanced than what we use now," she added.
