Hubei defended the women's team title in tennis by trouncing their rival,
Sichuan, 2-1 at the 10th Chinese National Games on Tuesday.
The first singles reeled off between the 21-year-old Yan Zi of Sichuan and
the 23-year-old Li Na of Hubei, both members of the Chinese national team and
titlists of Guangzhou International Women's Open.
The match was tipped critical for the final, as Sichuan enjoy great advantage
over their rivals in the second singles while Hubei have an upper-hand in the
doubles.
The first set saw both players breaking each other before Yan Zi took a lead
at 4-2 by saving her serve for the first time in the sixth game. But in the
following six games, Li Na came from behind to break Yan's three games and won
two of her serving games, taking the fist set 7-5.
In the second set, Li Na, 50th on WTA ranking this week, was broken in her
first game and fell behind at 2-0. But she kept remarkable edge over her
102th-ranked rival with powerful strokes, winning six games in a row till seeing
off her opponent at 6-2.
In the second singles, Zheng Jie of Sichuan, ranked 42nd in the world, made
an easy job by cracking Zhou Jing of Hubei, 992th in the world, with an
identical score of 6-0 in less than 35 minutes.
Hubei sealed the match with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the doubles through Li Ting
and Li Na over Zheng Jie and Chen Yin.
