Steven Wong awarded Hong Kong its first gold medal at the 10th Chinese
National Games, crowning in the men's Bike Moto Cross (BMX) while Yue Cong from
Shandong triumphed in the women's event in Nanjing on Tuesday.
Wong, a bronze-medalist in the UCI (International Cycling Union) Pan Pacific
Championships in Japan, showed his talents on the obstacle course with jumps,
bumps and turns.
"I did really well in the preliminary stage, but made some mistakes in the
semi-finals. I was lucky in the final and won the gold," said Wong.
Dominating from the preliminary stage, Wong outperformed local favorite Xu
Hen in the final to win his first national gold.
On his goal for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 17-year-olddid not hide
his ambition by saying "a gold would be nice, but right now, I still need to
practise more. I am young, there are still a lot I need to learn."
Local Xu took the silver while the bronze went to Yan Yi of Sichuan.
In the women's edition, Wang Ying of Jiangsu chased Yue and cruised forward
from the leading group in the last lap to take the sliver, beating Deng Hongxia
of Shandong to the third place.
Hong Kong made its debut in the National Games in 1997, and took two golds,
two silvers and one bronze in the ninth edition in Guangzhou in 2001.
BXM will make its appearance for the first time in the competition agenda in
the 2008 Olympics, together with triathlon and mountain bike.
