Fujian wins first shooting title in National Games

Zhang Liang from Fujian province won the first shooting gold medal in the
10th China National Games in Nanjing , East China on Thursday. Zhang crowned
the men's 10m air rifle title with a total of 701. 9 points. Liu Tianyou from
Sichuan took the silver, followed by Yao Ye from Jiangsu. Liu, first after
the preliminary round, was toppled by Zhang in the final and won the silver
medal with 700.0 points. Zhang contributed his victory to good final
performance. "I felt a bit nerves in the preliminary round, but I tried to relax
in the final," said Zhang. "I have met with Liu several times in the domestic
competitions. I knew he is a good shooter so I have to try my best to beat him.
Luckily, I won," said a smiling Zhang. In third place was Yao from host
Jiangsu province with 697.2 points. Yao, a national team member, shot a fine
final score of 102.2, making up for his one-point difference to Zhang Haonan
from Henan who started the final round in third place. Zhu Qinan and Li Jie,
top two finisher of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, were eliminated from the
final early on Thursday. Zhu, ranked No.1 in the men's air rifle shooting,
had 594 points and failed to make the eight-shooter final. "I had a good
start in the first three round," said Zhu, "but in the fourth and fifth rounds,
I made many mistakes." "I have no excuses. I did bad, they did well. That's
it," said Zhu. Li Jie, Zhu's teammate in China national team, also fell to
book a final berth with only 592 points. "This year I have never had a
satisfied result in competitions. I am considering to turn to other rifle
event," said Li.
