Grand slam winner of judo worlds, Olympic and world cup champion Sun Fuming
has yet decided on her retirement from competitive judo sport after the ongoing
10th National Games, but to take a coaching post in Liaoning provincial team,
said her coach Liu Yongfu in Nanjing on Thursday.
"Sun will work for the Liaoning judo team after the 10th National
Games, maybe as an assistant coach," said Liu, a legend coach who stood by all
of the five judo Olympic champions during his 22 years of coaching career.
"Sun and the coaching staff will further discuss on her physical
and mental status before deciding whether she retires from judo or keeps working
for participating in the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008," added the 57-year-old.
Sun, 31, firstly made her name to judo world in 1996 at the
Atlanta Olympic Games as she won the women's over-72kg category. And after years
of silence, the Liaoning native claimed the over-78kg title at the 2003 Osaka
world championships, while fulfillingher dream of taking a grand slam victory.
Athens, however, turned to be a sorrow memorial for Sun after the
top favorite's hope of winning another judo Olympic gold for China was smashed
by Cuba's Dayma Beltran in the women's over-78kgsemifinals.
Returning home with the disappointment of finishing third in
Athens, Sun carried out her promise of holding marriage ceremony to her husband
to recoup to her family after years of hard workingin judo.
To strike for a National Games gold medal for her home provincial
team had been Sun's wish before the National Games, which might be the last
edition for the veteran, but the 31-year-old gave up her chance of winning a
gold on Thursday, committing an unexpected loss to her former teammate Yan
Sirui, playing for Chinese Army.
