Cycling track of the 10th National Games has been disturbed by dispute in
Nanjing on Sunday as Yunnan's Yang Limei rejected to step on podium after
being involved in a clash to settle for bronze medal.
Yang Limei
The Yunnan cyclist, who was knocked down to the track by Ningxia's Li Wei in
the 49th lap of the women's individual point race, insisted that Li had been
keeping to block her on purpose.
"I heard Li Yan told Li Wei to block in my way before I was knocked down to
the track," said Yang, whose right leg was bruised during the clash and still
bleeding after the race.
Li Yan of Shandong, collecting a total of 49 points, and Li Wei,35 points,
took the gold and silver medals respectively, while Yang Liwei won the bronze on
31 points.
After the race, Yang refused to attend the awarding ceremony, saying that
"I'll never accept an unfair result until given a reasonable explanation". The
Yunnan team already appealed it to the discipline committee of the tournament.
Li Wei, a native of Shandong, is an exchange cyclist from the east China
province to Ningxia for this National Games.
She confirmed to press at a post-match news conference that sheand Li Yan
used to be teammates, but denied that they had any communication during the
race.
"We didn't say a word during race, as we both concentrated on the
competition," said Li.
Referees watching the event declined to make any comments, while Jiang
Guofeng, the secretary-general of the Chinese Cycling Association (CCA) promised
that the Chinese cycling governing body would investigate the dispute as soon as
possible.
