Shanghai edged host Jiangsu 1-0 here on Sunday, winning Group C of women's
soccer at the 10th National Games.
A weaker Jiangsu stepped up its defense in the confrontation with Shanghai,
which is widely considered a powerful candidate for the championship of women's
soccer. The first half ended goalless.
Forward Zhang Zheng found a chance in the 60th minute, scoring the lone goal
in a goalmouth scramble and securing her team's victory.
"Our players didn't play very well while Jiangsu's defenders had a great
job," said Shanghai coach Lin Zhihua after the match.
After the group matches, Shanghai, which won over all three other teams in
the group and had 10 goals and lost none, placed the first and has an
advantageous position in the draw for the quarter finals.
"We are now eyeing the championship," said Lin.
Jiangsu finished third in the group, having to draw lot to decide if it could
advance into the top eight.
Guangdong defeated Henan 3-2 in another game to finish second in the same
group. It also advanced automatically. Henan had no chance with three
defeats.
