Hot favorite tennis duo of Tianjin's Peng Shuai and Wang Yu failed to make
the semi-finals of the mixed-doubles event at the 10th National Games as they
were beaten in full sets by Chinese Army's Liu Wanting and Lu Hao in Nanjing on
Sunday.
Tied on set 6-4, 1-6, Peng and Wang, both the highest-ranked Chinese in the
men's and women's world placings, were broken twice to lose three games in
straight shortly into the decider, before the Tianjin pair managed to break back
to cut the decifit to 4-3.
The tense of the match, however, further prevented the Tianjin duo from
catching up with the rhythm and Chinese Army's Lu played an ace in the ninth
game to win it on 6-3.
"We lost the match for failing to hold on our own serves," said Wang Yu.
Winner over Peng and Wang, Liu Wanting and Lu Hao, will next play in Monday's
final against Li Ting and Zhu Benqiang after the mixed-doubles pair claimed a
straight-set victory 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday over Liu Nannan and Sun Peng, also from
Tianjin tennis team.
In the men's and women's doubles events, all seeds defeated their rivals to
make semis.
Peng Shuai, ranked 33rd in the WTA Entry Rankings, reached the women's
doubles semi-finals on Sunday pairing with Xie Yanze.
The No. 1 pair will face defending champions Li Na and Li Ting of Hubei in
the semis, while Sichuan's Yan Zi and Zheng Jie, the highest ranked Chinese duo,
take Ding Ding and Zhao Yijing of Beijing in Tuesday's semifinals of women's
doubles.
On the men's part, top-seeded Sun Peng and Wang Yu of Tianjin will play the
fourth-seeded Xue Feng and Zeng Shaoxuan from Jiangsu, and Lu Hao/Xu Ran of
Chinese Army face Yu Xinyuan and Zhang Yu of Beijing, after the former pairs won
Sunday's quarter-finals.
