Liaoning's Xu Hui/Guo Yuewon the table tennis mixed doubles title in a
stroke, beating Shanghai's Wang Liqin/Zhang Jing 4-0 in just over half an hour
at the National Games here.
Wang/Zhang, runners-up to Liaoning's pair at the national championships, had
nothing to answer the fast pace and accuracy of their opponents in the
gold-medal match.
"The National Games are more difficult than the national championships," Guo
said. "We're more confident and came out to win the first set and the gold
medal."
Wang, the world No.1 men's singles paddler, said the loss in the first set
opened the gate for Xu/Guo.
"They are a better pair than us. They deserved the win," Wang said. "We had
chance to take the first set, but we failed. That's the key of the match."
Xu and Guo led the first set 7-3 before Wang and Zhang chased it back to 7-7.
They held on to take the slight advantage at 10-9 and to the opening set to
set up the tone of the final.
The Shanghai pair gave up two or three unforced errors in each following set,
which proved costly in their loss.
Guangdong's Zhang Chao/Cao Xingni pocketed the bronze medals with a 3-1
(11-7, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7) win over Hao Shuai and Tang Na from Tianjin.
